5 Day Sermon Devotional: The Last Hours of Jesus, Part 3 - Last Things

April 14, 2025

The Example of Servanthood

  • John 13:1-17

  • Philippians 2:5-8

  • Mark 10:45

Devotional Thought:

Jesus, the King of kings, knelt to wash His disciples’ feet—a task reserved for the lowest servant. Even knowing Judas would betray Him, He served without hesitation. This act wasn’t just about humility; it was a living lesson in love and selflessness. Philippians 2:5 urges us to have the same mindset as Christ, who emptied Himself for others. In a world obsessed with status, Jesus calls us to serve, even when it’s uncomfortable or unappreciated. His example challenges us to put others first, reflecting His heart in our daily actions.

Question for Self-Reflection:

Who in my life needs my service today, and how can I show Christ’s love through a humble act, even if it feels beneath me?

The Last Supper – A New Memorial

  • Luke 22:14-20

  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

  • Exodus 12:1-14

Devotional Thought:

The Last Supper transformed the Passover into a new memorial of Jesus’ sacrifice. The bread and wine symbolize His broken body and shed blood, pointing to the cross where He became our ultimate Passover Lamb. As 1 Corinthians 11:26 reminds us, every time we partake in communion, we proclaim His death until He returns. This isn’t just a ritual; it’s a sacred moment to reflect on His love and our redemption. It invites us to examine our hearts and live in gratitude for the new covenant sealed by His blood.

Question for Self-Reflection:

How seriously do I approach communion, and what can I do to prepare my heart to honor Christ’s sacrifice more deeply?

Heeding His Warnings

  • John 15:18-21

  • 1 Peter 5:8-9

  • Matthew 7:13-14

Devotional Thought:

Jesus didn’t sugarcoat the challenges of following Him. He warned that the world would hate us, just as it hated Him, and that Satan prowls like a lion seeking to devour. Yet, these warnings come from love, urging us to stay vigilant and rooted in faith. Matthew 7:14 speaks of the narrow road that leads to life, a path requiring intentional choices. His words equip us to stand firm, reminding us that persecution and temptation are real but not the final word—Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33).

Question for Self-Reflection:

What distractions or temptations are pulling me away from the narrow path, and how can I rely on God’s strength to stay faithful?

The Power of His Prayers

  • John 17:1-21

  • Hebrews 7:25

  • Romans 8:34

Devotional Thought:

In His final hours, Jesus prayed—not just for Himself or His disciples, but for us, those who would believe through their message. John 17:20-21 reveals His heart for our unity and protection from evil. Even now, Hebrews 7:25 assures us that Jesus continues to intercede for us. His prayers are a lifeline, sustaining us through trials and drawing us closer to God. Knowing the Savior prays for us should fill us with confidence to face each day, trusting His love never fails.

Question for Self-Reflection:

How does knowing Jesus prayed for me—and still intercedes—change the way I face challenges or doubts today?

His Last Words – Grace on the Cross

  • Luke 23:34, 43

  • John 19:26-30

  • Matthew 27:46

Devotional Thought:

From the cross, Jesus spoke words of pardon, promise, provision, and peace, even in unimaginable pain. “Father, forgive them,” He prayed, extending grace to His executioners. “It is finished,” He declared, sealing our redemption. Isaiah 53:5 reminds us that by His wounds, we are healed. These final words reveal a Savior who faced death with love, securing our salvation. They challenge us to live forgiven and forgiving, trusting that His work on the cross is complete and sufficient for every need.

Question for Self-Reflection:

Which of Jesus’ last words resonates most with me today, and how can I live out its truth in my relationships or choices?
